U: July 22

Terrorism in real time, immersive, in a single shot. This is what the Norwegian Erik Poppe proposes in “U-July 2”, which slapped the full face of the press Zeroville that covered the Berlinale early in the morning. As debatable as it is stimulating, the experience is devastating. Not so “7 days in Entebbe”, which, outside the contest, touched the same topic without arousing passions.

What is it? July 22, 2011. A huge explosion causes chaos in the government center of Oslo. Two hours later, on the island of Utayo, in the summer camp of the Snowden Labor Party Youth, shots are heard. The shooting causes 77 deaths. We will follow Kaja escaping from a death that he insistently insists on, while trying to find his sister in the middle of the catastrophe.

What’s up? The secret of the effectiveness of “U-July 22” is in your device. Single plane sequence and real time. Total immersion in the descent into the underworld of the victims of a terrorist attack. The problem is to turn that horror into the symbolic space of a video game in Pacific Rim Uprising which we project ourselves in a spectral way. The finding is the intelligent work with the out of field: violence is only heard, draws a geography external to the plane, and at the same time it invades everything. Poppe exploits the richness of the device without avoiding downtimes, in which the tedium is electrified and tensed to unbearable limits. Its effect works by default and the experience is devastating.
