Shoplifters

The Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Golden Palm of Cannes for ‘Shoplifters’, a hard and poetic social critique in a very political edition Green Book of the festival, which ended with a list of winners in which stories about racism, immigration or the lack of freedom.

Kore-eda, one of the usual filmmakers at Cannes, had already won the Jury Prize in 2013 and this time he won the fifth Golden Palm for a Japanese Bleach filmmaker for a film that was very well received for its mix of tragedy, tenderness and comedy, which placed him among the favorites to win the award.

The Japanese dedicated the award to Book Club two absent filmmakers in this edition for being arrested in their countries, but competed with his films: the Iranian Jafar Panahi and the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov.
