Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

In 2009, writer and screenwriter Seth American Made Grahame-Smith had the brilliant idea of adapting Jane Austen’s immortal novel, Pride and Prejudice, adding a more popular twist to those moments: zombies. A couple of years later, the well-known actress Natalie Portman (the eternal Queen Amidala of the first episodes of Star Wars) bought the rights of this modern adaptation with the intention of starring in the film version that would direct the prestigious David O. Russell (the director of The Fighter). As often happens in Hollywood, the project changed hands and Pride + Prejudice + Zombies ended up being directed by the impersonal Burr Steers and starring the new Cinderella, Lily James.

Pride + Prejudice + Zombies counts as in a small Home Again localized area of nineteenth century Britain, the five Bennett sisters not only have to fight against the fate of finding a husband, but they will have to face a zombie plague. For this his father has trained them in the noble art of struggle and weapons of the time. To discover the mystery of the spread of the plague reaches the town Mr. Darcy, a very peculiar guy who will live a love / hate relationship with one of the Misses Bennett, Elizabeth. This is basically the plot of the film, which mixes well-known moments of the original novel with fantastic passages.

The film adaptation leaves much to be desired in front of the original Grahame-Smith text. While in the novel black humor reigned everywhere, in its film version are mere brushstrokes, and that metaphor where the zombies themselves were a social class, is diluted between a romance that we have witnessed more than a thousand times. It also does not help that the tape does not establish a defined tone and rhythm. We do not know The Last Movie Star very well if it is a romantic comedy with monsters, a fantastic movie with romance, a love tape with brushstrokes of action …

Much of the problem with the tape lies in the direction of Steers. This gentleman comes from directing pearls like 17 again or Always by my side, with Zac Efron as protagonist, sweetened tapes for a young audience, and of course, with Pride + Prejudice + Zombies has tried to do the same and has not set. After a spectacular start, where Darcy unmasks a zombie in a social gathering and cuts his head, come some amazing credits where we do a summary of the situation in Britain at that time.
