Max Steel

There is a huge amount of background in what refers to toy franchises that have had film versions, in search of taking advantage of the children’s The Dinner market that keeps them in force and in the process to expand the universe created around them. They can be mentioned from the two failed but taquilleras deliveries of G.I. Joe, going through that b-series adaptation of He-Man and the masters of the universe – starring Dolph Lundgren -, up to Transformers, which may be the one that has delivered the best results. This, including the super productions perpetrated by Michael Bay and the great animated film of 1986, The Void which had the luxury of having the voices of Leonard Nimoy and Orson Wells himself. But, no doubt, very few of them tried it out from a concept like Max Steel, a series of action figures belonging to Mattel, which were created as part of the boom that extreme sports had in the 90s. Although the concept retakes elements still very popular in fiction (such as nanotechnology), the reality is that seeing it without the nostalgia of those who enjoyed being children, it becomes tremendously generic. So, taking him to the big screen represented a complicated and even interesting challenge, even that the well-intentioned Stewart Hendler, who had not done so badly with the series of Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, fails to get ahead.

This film follows in the footsteps of Max McGrath, a teenager possessing a powerful energy, who joins an alien belonging to the ultralink race – with a very terrestrial name, Steel – to help him contain and use it. As a result, the young man became a kind of super-agent who fights the terrible villains determined to threaten humanity. Max Steel not only fails as a movie – which does not surprise anyone – but as a show. And it is not enough to have the resources to get a good amount of special effects and a couple of names that give Atomic Blonde some seriousness to the matter, say Andy Garcia and Maria Bello, whose participation is only explained if we think that somehow they have to pay the bills. No, for the machinery to work, no matter how empty and prefabricated it may be, it is necessary to give it at least a minimal structure that sustains the fireworks and some sense of rhythm. Two basic elements so that it manages to hook the viewer that, let’s not fool ourselves, here he does not expect a great story and neither a deep discourse nor an emotional development. The spectator would expect only an action vehicle to entertain … and that Max Steel is far from being.
