Maudie

“I’m not a cripple, just a different path,” says the protagonist of ‘Maudie’ before her husband. Born in 1903, Canadian artist Maud Lewis The Big Sick suffered from rheumatoid arthritis as a young man, which affected her mobility and the appearance of her body. However, the disease did not prevent him from taking a liking to painting. As a little girl, she made colorful cards to congratulate Christmas at the urging of her mother. As an adult she started working for a local fisherman, Everett Lewis, with whom she ended up marrying. Maude decorated the tiny home of both with happy motifs of nature. His naive style gained popularity and he managed to make a living thanks to his plain colored paintings filled with tulips, cats, oxen, deer and the marine landscapes of his area.

As famous in North America as practically unknown Mechanic Resurrection in Europe, the figure of Maud Lewis was undoubtedly biopic meat. It is a singularity as an artist, as it escapes the most fashionable currents throughout the twentieth century and the topics with which it is associated with painters. Neither bohemian, nor tormented, nor star nor postmodern, but on the contrary, Lewis however does respond to another commonplace that is adored in the narratives around the world of art: that of the anonymous genius that someone discovers by chance. In addition, the painter got notoriety despite developing all his work without moving from the place where he lived. For more inri, the physical difficulties and pains with which he lived all his life and the fact of having succeeded despite the lack of confidence shown by his relatives make his life a perfect example of a history of personal improvement.

The film dedicated by the Irish director Aisling Walsh ‘Maudie, the color of life’ covers with as many successes as mistakes the tics of this type of biographical drama. It starts with the protagonist as an adult, when she is forced to live with her aunt because her parents have died and her brother sells the family home to cover some debts.Toni Erdmann  Walsh flees from the victimization of the character and, without appealing to the epic of optimism, presents us with a Maud who tries to be happy despite an environment that undervalues her and marginalizes her due to her physical condition.
