Keeping Up with the Joneses

There are cinematic disasters that are never forgotten. La La Land Films so bad, that the traumas are easy to remember even if they never meet again. In contrast, there are films that could never be qualified as deficient but frustrate and irritate more than the bad ones when it is clear that they are not going to fulfill their potential. “Keeping Up With the Joneses”, the new 20th Century Fox comedy that premieres today in Puerto Rico, belongs to that last category.

The production is a concept film (The new neighbors are spies)  Colossal that fulfills its mission to generate generic and harmless entertainment. This would not be problematic if the film did not have the talents of Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm and Isla Fisher under the direction of Greg Mottola, artists who have excelled in this genre on previous occasions.

The actors do not have much to blame. For Galifianakis the role of “Jeff Gaffney” is a quite radical change to what he has done in films like “The Hangover”, “Due Date” or “The Campaign”. In this film his character is a good guy who is a bit boring in his Lady Bird work and not being too risky or demanding as a husband.
