The House with a Clock in Its Walls

This scary movie is based on the book by John First Kill Bellairs (1973) with illustrations by Edward Gorey, the first in a series of 12 volumes; so surely there will be sequels.

The creators of the film have said that they wished to recapture the magic of E.T. and Gremlins, (both co-produced, like this film, by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment), although it fails to reach such high heights.

House sometimes loses the thread of the Imperium tangled points of the plot and skimps outdoors, but it does capture the childlike wonder that characterized those old movies.

Imposing Victorian mansions with forged steel grilles receive our young protagonist, Lewis (a somewhat opaque Owen Vaccaro), a 10-year-old boy who has recently been orphaned, getting off a bus in a small town in Michigan The Predator to go live with his eccentric -And that’s saying little- Uncle Jonathan (Jack Black).
