High Life

The Toronto audience is very educated. That’s how Canadians are. Cinéfilos and very kind. In a festival like this, directed and designed for the public, the Widows public turns over, cramming every screening, applauds like a madman at the end and rarely leaves the room, even less if it is the premier and the team is sitting next to him in the orchestra.

But this Toronto 2018 happened just the opposite in the official pass of High Life, the latest film by French director Claire Denis, her foray into science fiction, in English and with actors of the stature of Robert Pattinson. At the half an hour of the movie, the spectators The Nice Guys began to leave. I have rarely seen such a flight here. When the titles of credit came out, the usual warm welcome was transformed into a cold silence of eternal seconds and scattered, confused and insecure applause.

Confusion. Coldness. It’s normal for the audience to feel that way. She needed a little more time to digest what she had just seen: a spatial, sexual, orgasmic adventure with black holes, a Fuck Room (masturbation room), a long-haired Juliette Binoche, obsessed with reproduction, a Robert Pattinson as a lonely and chaste father. What had happened? What was he trying to tell? Is it intentionally provocative and unpleasant?

It starts like any other special trip: astronaut (Pattinson) fixing the ship on the outside, talking to someone inside, only that this someone is a baby that bellows without compassion. Once inside, he feeds her, clothes her and talks to her. “Never drink your own urine, or eat your shit”, there are the limits, it seems, and also the beginning of this surrealist and retro-futurist journey in a rectangular ship, sepia colors, worn and dirty. Then, this protagonist, called Monte, reopens the door of the ship to go pulling his old companions back. One by one. All appear floating in space. They never got to complete the mission entrusted: to arrive at a black hole to prove an energetic theory and thus to be redeemed. All  Green Book the crew of this ship were express or problematic people. And neither the hope of a future, transformed them.
