Florence Foster Jenkins

It is obvious that the fame must be taken The Fundamentals of Caring with some caution and not be blindly believe that someone who has become popular overnight is the result of an innate talent that has spread to the four winds. At a time when any image or statement made by the celebrity turns viral, it is curious that between the twenties and forties of the last century a wealthy and old woman, an unattractive physique and a frightening voice, came to become a phenomenon despite its null musical talent.

Florence Foster Jenkins had enough money to live on rents for the rest of his days, but his obsession to succeed in the music world made him invest all his fortune in an unattainable a priori purpose and, why not say, almost suicidal . Her passion for opera was not shared by her rich father and the young woman from Pennsylvania decided to escape to Philadelphia to start a career as a teacher and pianist. In 1885, at the age of 17, he married Frank Thornton Jenkins, a doctor who infected him with syphilis and disappeared shortly after the wedding. Later she moved to New York, where she fostered the musical atmosphere of the city through The Verdi Club, a place where she gave recitals for wealthy people, especially her All I See Is You circle of friends, formed mostly by ladies with scant hearing who felt fascinated by Jenkins’ charisma and his ability to make them laugh.

Dressed in impossible costumes that she designed herself and heir to a great fortune after the death of her parents, Florence was determined to start a career as an opera singer after 40 years. It did not matter that her voice sounded frightful and that she herself compared herself in vain with stars of the likes of Frieda Hempel or Luisa Tetrazzini. Her devotion to delight the audience with her squawks, believing that it was the sweet song of a Wonder Woman  bird, turned her into an icon that managed to sell more albums than many of her talented contemporaries. In 1912, at 44, she gave her first recital, animated by an aristocratic but mediocre British actor, St. Clair Bayfield, who became a manager and later a husband of convenience.
