Eddie the Eagle

In his closing speech at the Olympic Games. In the winter of Calgary’88, the IOC President, Juan Antonio Samaranch, said: “In these Games some The 5th Wave athletes have won gold medals, others have broken records and one has even flown like an eagle”. He could not continue. The grandstand burst into a unanimous cry: “Eddie, Eddie!”

This was the exceptional colophon to the unusual media impact of a unique character. Short, chubby, with glass-topped glasses hiding some vivacious eyes, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards became the sensation of the White Games of Calgary for being the worst by far, a peculiar route to stardom that others would travel later .

Eddie, an Englishman from Cheltenham born on December 5, 1963, had always flirted with the idea of being an Olympian even though he lacked natural gifts for it. As a child he dreamed of being a specialist in action films, but he ended up as a plasterer.

One day he saw a ski jumping competition on television and was captivated. For two years he dedicated himself to training in the most pilgrim way possible: practicing improvised descents with borrowed skis and jumping from scrapped double-decker buses to land in any way.
