Beautiful Darkness

Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny’s new Lizzie Borden film, called “Lizzie,” hit the limited box-office this weekend. The thriller opened in four theaters this Wonder Woman week but is already off to a great start at the domestic box-office. Despite the very limited release “Lizzie” grossed over $49K over the film’s debut weekend, averaging $12,474 a theater. To give you some perspective, “The Predator” opened across 4,037 theaters with an average of $5,945 this weekend, while “A Simple Favor” opened across 3,102 locations with an average of $5,174. The only film to top “Lizzie” this week was “Museo” with actor Gael Garcia Bernal, the film made $17,500 in just one-theater.

“Lizzie” is from Roadside Attractions and Saban Films and was directed by Craig W. Macneill. Joining Stewart and Sevigny in the film are Kim Dickens, Fiona Shaw, and Denis Iceman 2 O’Hare. Much like the films before it, “Lizzie” once again dives into the story of Lizze Borden, a woman who was tried for the murder of her stepmother and father back in 1892. In this new adaptation Sevigny is playing the role of Lizzie Borden, while Kristen Stewart is playing the role of Lizzie’s maid.

Both critics and moviegoers seem to have the same opinion on the film over on RottenTomatoes. The thriller currently has an Audience score of 77%, Gloria Bell while critics have given the film a score of 73%. Movies and television have gone back to the Lizzie Borden well many times in the past, just a few years ago in 2015 Christina Ricci, Clea DuVall, and Cole Hauser starred in a TV mini-series called “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles”. If you missed the official trailer for “Lizzie” when it was released on social-media back in August, you can watch that trailer below to get a closer look at the film.
