Beautiful Boy

It is difficult to question a movie like Beautiful Boy without being accused of cynical and soulless. It is a film made by talented artists that is committed to excite, to inspire. The problem is to appreciate with what resources he does it. And, according to the sensibility of whoever writes, Hereditary he appeals to a horrified denunciation and to such manipulative and demagogic forms that he manages to irritate rather than thrill. If we take into account that at the end of the projection for “common” public (the press were few) there was much more applause than boos is likely to be in the minority and that a few spectators are moved by this descent into the infernos of an 18 year old teenager who consumes a lot and everything (heroin, cocaine and especially methamphetamines) during a good part of the almost two hours of film.

Closer to Hallmark melodrama than to auteur cinema, Beautiful Boy is based on the memoir of David Sheff (Carell), a journalist from San Francisco who tries (not too lucky) to accompany his son Nic (Chalamet, the revelation of Call me by your name) Peppermint in successive and unfruitful hospitalizations to detoxify a body with too many dangerous substances. When there seems to be a glimmer of light on the road, again darkness floods the tunnel. The young man escapes, disappears and is rescued from the worst slums.

The two protagonists are fine (even very well), the two women – the mother of the boy who plays A Star Is Born Amy Ryan and the sympathetic new wife of David who plays Maura Tierney – also bring intense secondary characters, but the film is devoid of the nobility that one would have wanted for this kind of extreme trances. Political correctness and awareness always seem to be underlining, dictating everything.

Thus, Beautiful Boy suffers, suffers with an almost obscene (in all senses) explicitness, Bad Times at the El Royale accompanied by a bombastic and crushing musicality that To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before ends up ruining beautiful songs like the John Lennon homonym or Neil Young’s Heart of Gold. The multiple posters that “crown” the film do nothing but amplify the sobering and self-help tone. Surely, there will be someone to serve him.
